Fighting Hunger Together in Benton and Washington Counties

Arkansas has the fourth-highest rate of senior citizens among its population, and the rate is even higher in Washington and Benton Counties. Between the two counties, there are an estimated 63,500 people age 60 and older.

About 16% of our senior population is considered “hungry”, a rate that is about the same throughout the state of Arkansas. Arkansas ranks 3rd in the nation for the number of seniors with chronic diseases, and 3rd in seniors that report a disability.

The Walmart Foundation has launched a campaign called “Fighting Hunger Together” and Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Arkansas has joined them to improve access to food in Washington and Benton Counties.

The first thing we learned is that the food is out there and available.  So, the goal became to combat hunger among seniors by connecting them with the resources, programs, services, and activities that currently exist.  We have come together as a community coalition of providers from all across both counties to make a commitment to work together to keep the community informed of what is offered through local programs and the food pantries that are operating in the area.  We also want to share nutrition ideas to help everyone make the best choices and improve the nutritional value of what is eaten whenever possible.  We’ve compiled this information to help you access all the resources available in our community.

Please know you are not alone. The coalition of agencies and organizations in this brochure are here because we want to help make sure that people have the food they need and become aware of more of the resources in our community.  We want to reach as many of the people in need of food as humanly possible because there is no reason anyone should go without.  There is no shame in getting a little help now and then when it is needed.  When you’re able, you’ll help someone else and probably have already done so many times during your lifetime.  That is what being a community is all about, reaching out to help each other and Fighting Hunger Together.
